I still remember the first time I heard live music. I was three years old, and the band was playing country music. I went out on the dance floor and put my patent leather shoes to work, while the guitar player smiled down on me. This was the first time I recognized the connection between sound and body, and moment enriched my world forever. Time stopped, and for a blessed while I knew nothing but the bliss of being both lost and somehow found.
Naturally, I have loved music ever since and I have danced my way through hundreds of shows over the years. But few moments stand out in my mind like the first time I saw Sirius.B. Two years ago I walked into the courtyard of my favorite bar to find dozens of people laughing as they swung each around to the beat of gypsy folk meeting rock music. It was a musical hybrid unlike anything I’d ever heard before – a bouncing, rollicking sound that made me think of campfires, caravans, and whiskey. I wanted to watch the band, to see how they communicated in music-speak the way that only musicians can, but within seconds I was whisked into the dance area by an older gentleman who turned out to be the finest dance partner I’ve ever had. And just like that, I was one of the laughing people I’d walked up on moments before.
I’ve been to many of Sirius.B’s shows since, and they never fail to create a magical atmosphere. Strangers become dance partners, and then friends. For the time being, we are all transformed into gypsies at the campfire, and the music is all that matters. And like a three year old who hears live music for the first time, I want to stay suspended forever in that place where I both lose and find myself, all at once.
